Health Canada has cautioned the use of Comfrey, what are their concerns.
A.
Health Canada has placed a warning on the use of Comfrey of the Russian and Prickly Comfrey variety. These contain a contituent called echimidine, which has been known to cause liver damage when taken internally in large doses.
Matter Company does not use these varieties of Comfrey; instead we use symphytum officinalis, or common Comfrey that has not been cautioned against by Health Canada.

Is Comfrey Safe for use on my skin?

Yes. It is one of the main ingredients used in herbal medicine for helping to repair broken skin. This is due to the presence of allantoin, a chemical constituent that has cell proliferating properties to help heal wounds very quickly.
I’ve been using this balm consistently for the past 10 years, and it’s safe to say it has earned a permanent place in my daily routine. Over the decade, I have used it on every topical injury. My kids think its magic balm <3

I have been using this for years, for all kinds of skin issues -- and I have very sensitive skin. I don't usually use it on my palms, because I find it a bit too greasy for that, (even though the "greasy" feeling doesn't last long) but do use it on the backs of my hands and wherever else I need it. It's one of my all-time favourite body-care products.
I bought this salve for my father because of his poor chapped hands. He used to be a trades person and developed calloused hands over the years. Due to his old age, his hands have now turned from being rugged to being dry with poor skin integrity. His chronic dry skin resulted in painful cracks that never fully healed on his fingertips. He would further exacerbate his condition when he insisted on hand-washing his dishes. It was notably worse for over a year. No matter what sort of hand lotion or oil he used, the lesions would always come back. It hurt my heart to see his hands bleeding and in pain for so long. When I read the description for this salve at OOAK, I decided to give a try. My dad’s hands healed almost completely and he loves the relief that this product gives him.
